As one of the key programs offered through the South Central Council of Governments (SCCOG), the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) provides a wide variety of services to people 60 years and older in both Huerfano and Las Animas counties. Under the mandate of the Older Americans Act of 1965, the AAA was established to provide information and services to all seniors, regardless of their financial status, with the basic goals of promoting a healthy and safe existence in their own homes as long as possible.

Since 1973, AAA has been providing services, such as Congregate and In-Home Meals, In-Home Personal Care and Homemaker Services, Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Material Aid (eyeglasses and dentures), Legal Assistance and Transportation Assistance in cooperation with SCCOG’s Transit Program. Also available is advocacy for nursing home residents through the Long Term Care Ombudsman and Respite Care services for family caregivers through the National Family Caregivers Support Program. The AAA coordinates efforts with all organizations in the bi-county area with regard to senior issues and can provide information regarding agencies in other parts of Colorado and throughout the nation.

Nutrition
Congregate meals are provided at 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday, at the H.R. Sayre Center at 1222 San Pedro Street and Corazon Square at 201 Raton Street in Trinidad, as well as at the Huerfano Community Center at 928 Russell Street in Walsenburg. In addition, meals are provided at satellite meal sites, on different days of the week, in Hoehne, Kim, Segundo and Aguilar. A suggested donation of $2.00 is requested for seniors registered in the program and a $4.00 Guest Fee is required for those below 60 years old and nonregistered participants. The proceeds are used to sustain and expand our meal service throughout our region.

In-Home Meals
After an initial consultation with Senior Service Coordinators, seniors who are homebound due to a disability or are recovering from an illness can receive lunch, five days a week, delivered to their homes. Currently, this service is limited to the communities of Trinidad and Walsenburg, however through the efforts of volunteers, lunches are being provided to rural seniors residing in surrounding rural locations. A suggested donation of $2.50 is requested for registered participants and a Guest Fee of $4.00 for those below 60 years of age and nonregistered participants. These proceeds are also used to sustain and expand the homebound meal services.
